FAQs by Outgoing Students

Following are the answers to frequently asked questions by students applying for exchange abroad. We hope that this will help answer most of your questions.

  • Can I go on Exchange?
  • PGP students are eligible to go on exchange in the 5th term (i.e. September to December) of their degree. Applications begin just before the end of first year (i.e. February to March).

  • Why do people go on Exchange?
    • - To gain academically by taking subjects that are not available, more specialised or more advanced than those offered at IIM A.
    • - To get a broader perspective by living in another country and experiencing a different culture
    • - To develop insights into other cultures and interact with people from all over the world
    • - To learn new languages
    • - And yes, to have truckloads of fun.

  • Who is eligible?
  • PGP students should completed their first year without receiving any course backlogs (i.e. an I or F grade in any course).

  • What is the Ranking Procedure?
  • Ranking is generally based on:
    • - CGPA in the first year
    • - Location of Summer Internship (i.e. whether in India or abroad) - IIMA endeavours to give all its students equal foreign exposure
    • - Previous International Exposure

Please note that there are enough seats and if one isn't too rigid, the choices are plenty. However, depending on the batch representatives, this may change from year to year.

  • How to get started?
  • Studying abroad is a big decision to make. Though you might have heard that a certain university is good, it is essential to maintain an open mind and be flexible in your choices. Also, somebody else's choices may not be necessarily be the same as yours. If you wish to make right decision, you should be willing to spend some thought.
Trying to answer the following questions would help:

    • What are MY objectives and reasons for wanting to go on exchange?
    • What are MY academic and career goals?
    • What are MY outside interests, and where will I best be able to pursue these?

You should also think about the travel and living expenses in various alternatives and decide which suits you. Speak to a lot of seniors before finalizing your decision.
